EVALUATION

THIS UNIT HAS BEEN MY FAVOURITE AND MOST SUCCESSFUL THROUGHOUT MY TIME AT UNIVERSITY. FOR THIS UNIT I HAVE CREATED 2 FABRIC COLLECTIONS (1 DIGITAL PRINT & 1 COMBINED PROCESSES), WITH A LOOK BOOK TO VISUALISE THESE PROFESSIONALLY IN A FASHION CONTEXT. THIS PROJECT HAS BEEN INSPIRED THROUGH THE IDEA OF 'ABSTRACT', CHANGING STRUCTURES/OBJECTS AND RE-CONSTRUCTING THEM IN TO UNUSAL SHAPES AND PRINTS. FOCUSING ON COMPOSITION OF DETAILS WITHIN MY PRINTS SUCH AS COLOUR AND SHAPE HAS ALLOWED ME TO CREATE COLLECTIONS WITH VARIATION AND FLUIDITY.

AS A PRINT DESIGNER I FEEL MY DESIGNS LOOK MORE PROFESSIONAL, THROUGH IMPROVED DIGITAL SKILLS SUCH AS ILLUSTRATOR AND PHOTOSHOP. I FEEL COMBINING PRINTS WITH MY OTHER SKILLS SUCH AS EMBROIDERY IS ALSO A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR TOWARDS THIS. BY EXPLORING MY PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS ALONGSIDE DRAWINGS AND DIGITAL PROCESSES ALSO BENEFITED MY COLLECTIONS, ADDING CONTRASTING TONES AND TEXTURES WHICH I WOULD OF BEEN UNABLE TO ACHIEVE WITH JUST ONE. ALSO THROUGH REFINING PREVIOUS IDEAS AND WORK FROM MY LASER COLLECTION IN MY PRACTISE UNIT ALLOWED ME TO CREATE DESIGNS FOR THIS UNIT WHICH ADD VARIETY AND DEPTH TO MY COMBINED PROCESS COLLECTION. RESEARCHING MY MARKET FOR EACH COLLECTION EARLY ON HELPED ME CREATE SUITABLE PRINTS FOR EACH COLLECTION AND USE APPROPRIATE FABRICS.

CREATING A LOOK BOOK FOR MY DESIGNS HAS ENHANCED MY ABILITIES TO DIRECT A FASHION PHOTO SHOOT, SOMETHING WHICH I WAS NOT VERY CONFIDENT IN. NOW I HAVE HAD THE CHANCE TO DO THIS TWICE I FEEL MUCH MORE CONFIDENT IN DIRECTING, STYLING AND ALSO CREATING SETS WHICH REFLECTS THE THEME SURROUNDING THE SHOOT. I ALSO FEEL IN DOING THIS HELPED REFINE MY CONTEXT AND ALLOWS ME TO VISUALISE MY DESIGNS IN THE INDUSTRY.

THROUGH COLLABORATING WITH A PHOTOGRAPHER AND ALSO A GRAPHIC DESIGNER IN THIS UNIT HAS TAUGHT ME HOW DOING THIS CAN BOOST YOUR OUTPUTS, BENEFITTING BOTH INVOLVED, AS DISCUSSING EACH OTHERS IDEAS AND VISIONS BOOSTS CREATIVITY, RESULTING IN HIGHER QUALITY WORK.

I FEEL CREATING A WEBSITE, A LINKED IN PAGE AND CREATING LOGOS HAS ENABLED ME TO PUT MY SELF IN TO THE INDUSTRY IN A CREATIVE AND PROFESSIONAL WAY. THIS UNIT HAS BEEN FOCUSED ON 'OUTWARD FACING' APPROACH AND I FEEL I HAVE KEPT THIS ATTITUDE AND MENTALITY THROUGHOUT THIS PROJECT.

AFTER THIS UNIT I FEEL I AM MORE PREPARED TO LEAVE UNIVERSITY AND HAVE A CLEAR IDEA OF WHO I AM AS A DESIGNER AND WHAT MY STYLE IS. I LOOK FORWARD TO THE DEGREE SHOW TO SEE MY WORK DISPLAYED IN A PROFESSIONAL SETTING AND ALSO ANY FEEDBACK FROM THE INDUSTRY.

COLLECTION 2 // DIGITAL PRINT // ETHOS // LASER CUTTING

COLLECTION 2 IS MY COMBINED PROCESSES COLLECTION INCLUDING DIGITAL PRINT, ETHOS EMBROIDERY AND LASER CUTTING. MY OVERALL THEME ABSTRACT STRUCTURES SURROUNDS THE COLLECTION, HOWEVER THIS TIME I ALSO BROUGHT IN DRAWINGS/IMAGES OF GOTHIC ARCHITECTURE, FOCUSING ON ITS INTRICATE DETAILS. THIS COMBINED WITH PREVIOUS PHOTOGRAPHS OF FLORALS, CREATED REALLY INTERESTING ABSTRACT SHAPES TO USE AS PRINT DESIGNS. I WANTED THIS COLLECTION TO CONTRAST WITH MY PREVIOUS BOLD, COLOURFUL COLLECTION 1, THEREFORE I HAVE USED A MONOCHROME COLOUR PALETTE. FOR ALL DESIGNS OTHER THAN THE LEATHER LASER CUT ONES, I CHOSE TO USE THE FABRIC CREPE DE CHINE AS IT IS STILL A LIGHT WEIGHT FABRIC BUT HAS A MORE CLEAN AND SOPHISTICATED FINISH, WHICH I FEEL REFLECTS MY HIGH END MARKET. EARLY RESEARCH IN TO THIS HELPED ME GREATLY WHEN DECIDING.

DIGITAL PRINT

AS PART OF THE COLLECTION I WANTED SOME TO BE SOLEY DIGITAL PRINT, WITH MORE FOCUS ON A MINIMAL LINEAR/GRAPHIC STYLE, CONTRASTING ALONGSIDE MORE LAYERED, CHAOTIC DESIGNS BUT STILL PORTRAYING AN ABSTRACT AESTHETIC. I FEEL BY USING THE MAGIC WAND TOOL ON PHOTOSHOP AND SELECTING RANDOM PARTS OF DRAWINGS/PHOTOGRAPHS HELPED ACHIEVE THIS PROCESS, CREATING VARIETY AND UNIQUE DESIGNS.

ETHOS

USING THE ETHOS EMBROIDERY MACHINE HAS ALLOWED SOME OF MY DESIGNS TO GO FROM 2D TO SLIGHTLY MORE 3D. USING THE ETHOS TO ADD DETAILS TO DIGITAL PRINTS HAS CREATED INTERESTING LINEAR QUALITIES AND ADDS TO THE MORE GRAPHIC STYLE I WANTED. THE STITCHING IS BOLD, AND REMINDS ME OF COLOUR BLOCKING, EMPHASISING MY MONOCHROME COLOUR PALETTE. CREATING DESIGNS SOLEY EMBROIDERY ALSO ADDS TO THIS, I LIKE HOW THE LIGHT REFLECTS FROM THE STITCHING, GIVING MY COLLECTION A MORE POLISHED FINISH.

LASER CUTTING

FROM USING THE LASER CUTTER IN MY PREVIOUS PRACTISE UNIT, I KNEW IT WOULD BE A GOOD PROCESS TO SHOWCASE THE INTRICATE ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS FOR THIS COLLECTION. THROUGH THIS I WAS ABLE TO CREATE DESIGNS QUICKLY, KNOWING WHAT WOULD WORK BEST. BY USING LEATHER APPEALS TO MY HIGH END MARKET, ALSO GIVING ME VARIATION TO PLAY WITH PLACEMENT ON A GARMENTS AND THE BODY, SOMETHING I WILL CONSIDER WHEN DESIGNING FLATS AND FASHION ILLUSTRATIONS FOR THIS COLLECTION.

LOOKBOOK SHOOTS // LAYOUTS

FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHS IN MY LOOK BOOK I COLLABORATED WITH 2ND YEAR PHOTOGRAPHY STUDENT TILLY HALDEN. THROUGH THIS THE PHOTOGRAPHS ARE MORE PROFESSIONAL VISUALLY, DUE TO HER EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND USE OF TECHNICAL PROCESSES EG LIGHTING & FRAMING. BY WORKING WITH TILLY ALLOWED US BOTH TO SHARE IDEAS, BOOSTING CREATIVITY WITHIN THE SHOOTS AND PRODUCING HIGHER LEVEL OUTCOMES.

MANCHESTER TOWN HALL SHOOT // COLLECTION 2

AS THIS WAS MY FIRST SHOOT FOR MY LOOK BOOK, I FEEL I WAS WELL PREPARED BEFORE HAND, RESEARCHING AND PUTTING ALOT OF THOUGHT IN TO OUTFITS AND STYLING. I WANTED SIMPLE SHAPED GARMENTS, OVERSIZED BUT STILL HAVING A SOPHISTICATED LOOK, REFLECTING MY HIGH END MARKET. I FEEL THIS WAS ACHIEVED, ALONGSIDE THE MODELS POSES AND POSITIONING BEING A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR. BEFORE THE SHOOT I CAME ACROSS A FEW DIFFICULTIES SUCH AS CANCELLATION OF THE MAKE UP ARTIST 10 MINUTES BEFORE THE SHOOT AND THE MODEL CANCELLING THE NIGHT BEFORE. HOWEVER AS A PAIR ME AND THE PHOTOGRAPHER WERE ABLE TO OVERCOME THESE ISSUES BY FINDING REPLACEMENTS QUICKLY AND CARRY ON WITH THE SHOOT AS SCHEDULED.

STUDIO SHOOT // COLLECTION 1

DUE TO THE DIFFICULTIES THAT UNEXPECTEDLY AROSE IN MY PREVIOUS SHOOT I MADE SURE FOR THIS ONE I HAD FULL CONFIRMATION ON BOTH MODEL AND MAKE UP ARTIST. I ALSO MADE SURE I HAD ALL PROPS AND OUTFITS TO EVERY DETAIL DAYS BEFORE, SO I WOULD BE FULLY PREPARED AND GET FULL USE OF TIME EFFICIENTLY. AS MY PREVIOUS SHOOT WAS MY FIRST TIME DIRECTING FOR A LOOK BOOK, THIS TIME AROUND I WAS MORE CONFIDENT IN WHAT IMAGES I WANTED AND THEREFORE WAS ABLE TO DIRECT MORE ACCURATELY, LEADING TO STRONG, PROFESSIONAL OUTCOMES. MY SET DESIGN RESEARCH BEFORE HAND REALLY BENEFITTED THIS SHOOT, THE WHITE ON WHITE GIVES THE PHOTOGRAPHS A CLEAN AND MORE ART DIRECTED FINISH.

LAYOUT EXPERIMENTATION // INSPIRATION

AS I HAVE ONLY JUST RECEIVED MY EDITED PHOTOGRAPHS BACK I HAVE ONLY SLIGHTLY EXPERIMENTED WITH PRINT PLACEMENT AND ALSO POTENTIAL LAYOUTS FOR THE LOOK BOOK. THE PURPOSE FOR MY LOOK BOOK WILL BE TO POTRAY MY SKILLS AS A PRINT DESIGNER AND ALSO MY ABILITY TO STYLE AND DIRECT A SHOOT. THEREFORE I FEEL PLACING LARGER IMAGES OF MY PRINTS BEHIND PHOTOGRAPHS IS A EFFECTIVE WAY TO PROMOTE THIS COMBINED WITH MORE MINIMAL/SIMPLE BACKGROUNDS TO FOCUS MORE ON MY STYLING AND POSITIONING OF PROPS ON SET. IN THESE LAST WEEKS I AIM TO REALLY EXPERIMENT & REFINE MY LAYOUTS.

[I.D MAGAZINE]

FOR LAYOUT INSPIRATION FOR MY LOOK BOOK I HAVE BEEN LOOKING THROUGH FASHION MAGAZINES SUCH AS, VOGUE & ID AND ALSO TREND WEBSITES SUCH AS WGSN. I WANT MY LOOK BOOK TO BE QUITE MINIMAL, USING VARIATION IN THE PLACEMENT OF MY IMAGES ON A DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD, NOT JUST STICKING TO ONE IMAGE PER HALF PAGE. ALSO TO EXPERIMENT WITH SIZE AND PROPORTIONS & CROPPING.
