PRESENTATION WEEK

THIS WEEK INSTEAD OF A TUTORIAL WE HAD A PRESENTATION OF OUR WORK SO FAR. I FELT IT WENT OKAY AND BY CREATING THE PRESENTATION ALLOWED ME TO SEE WHERE MY WORK WAS AND WHERE IT WAS DEVELOPING TO. I'M QUITE A NERVOUS SPEAKER SO IT WAS DAUNTING TALKING IN FRONT OF A CLASS, BUT AT THE SAME TIME IT GAVE ME PRACTICE IF I EVER HAD TO DO THIS IN THE FUTURE.

IN MY FEEDBACK I GOT TOLD HOW THEY LIKED MY IDEAS OF MANIPULATING MATERIALS AND FABRICS TO CREATE MORE 3D WORK. I ALSO WAS TOLD I SHOULD MAYBE HAVE MORE SAMPLING TO GO ALONGSIDE MY RESEARCH. THIS HAS MADE ME THINK ABOUT MY OUTCOMES AND HOW I NEED TO START DEVELOPING MY PRINT COLLECTIONS MORE PROMPTLY AND ONLY CARRY ON WITH PROCESSES THAT ARE RELEVANT TO MY WORK AND WITH BENFIT IT. THEREFORE I FEEL THIS PRESENTATION HAS BEEN BENEFICIAL AS I AM NOW MORE FOCUSED TO DEVELOP IDEAS AND CREATE SOME INTERESTING OUTCOMES.

PRINCESS PLEATING

AFTER WANTING TO EXPERIMENT WITH PLEATING I GOT AN INDUCTION ON THE PRINCESS PLEATER, ALLOWING ME TO CREATING KNEAT FOLDS AND PLEATS WITHIN FABRIC. I REALLY ENJOYED LEARNING THIS PROCESS AS I FEEL IT COULD REALLY DEVELOP MY WORK AND COMBINE TEXTURE AS WELL AS LINE QUALITIES. THEREFORE I DIGITALLY PRINTED SOME FABRIC TO SEE THE RESULTS.

I LIKE THE TEXTURES IT HAS CREATED, AND THE MOVEMENT AND FLOW OF THE FABRIC. HOWEVER I FEEL ASIF I AM NOT ABLE TO REALLY DEVELOP THIS PROCESS MUCH FURTHER. IT CREATES STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS I WANT BUT YOU ARE LIMITED TO SIZE AND FABRICS, THEREFORE I FEEL AS IF I AM GOING TO LEAVE THIS PROCESS AND FOCUS ON OTHER AREAS IN MY WORK.

CHANGING STRUCTURES

AS MY CONCEPT IS ABSTRACT STRUCTURES, MY THOUGHTS WENT TO HOW CAN I MAKE A STRUCTURE ABSTRACT. I PREVIOUSLY LOOKED AT MANIPULATING MATERIALS JUST AS THE CUTAWAY, BUT HOW COULD I EXPERIMENT IN OTHER WAYS. THEN I THOUGHT ABOUT HOW I COULD CHANGE A STRUCTURE. LEADING ME TO FREEZING WATER; TURNING IT TO ICE, THEN I BREAKING IT UP. LEAVING FRAGMENTS OF ICE AND SHARP EDGED LINES. I THEN DROPPED INK IN TO THESE AND PHOTOGRAPHED THEM.

THE PHOTOGRAPHS PORTRAY REALLY INTERESTING TONES ASIF THEY ARE ALMOST LUMINOUS AND GLOWING. THE REFLECTIVE LIGHT REALLY ADDS TO THE VISUAL, AND I LIKE HOW THE DIFFERENT SHAPED FRAGMENTS ALL CONJOIN IN TO ONE, RE-CONSTRUCTING IN TO A NEW SHAPE.I FEEL ASIF THESE COULD BE PRINTS IN THEMSELVES, HOWEVER I REALLY WANT TO EDIT AND MANIPULATE THESE IMAGES AGAIN AS I FEEL THEY WOULD CREATE REALLY ABSTRACT, GRAPHIC DIGITAL PRINTS.

3D

FENDI SPRING 2015

I SEEN FENDI WERE USING LASER CUT TECHNIQUES FOR THEIR SPRING COLLECTION, YOU CAN SEE THE 3D CUTAWAY ELEMENTS IMMEDIATELY GIVE THE GARMENT SOMETHING EXTRA. I LOVE HOW THE FLOWERS LOOK LIKE THEIR COMING OFF THE DRESS, ADDS TEXTURE AND EMBELLISHMENT TO THE GARMENT.YOU CAN SEE THE FABRIC USED IS THICK, THEREFORE TO ACHIEVE THIS I MUST USE THESE SORT OF FABRIC OR MY DESIGNS WILL NOT LOOK 3D.

NOA RAVIV

I FOUND THIS DESIGNER NOA RAVIV WHO ALSO USES 3D TO CREATE ARCHITECTURAL/STRUCTURAL SHAPES. HER DESIGNS ARE VERY CONTEMPORARY AND FASHION FORWARD. SHE USES LINE TO CREATE STRUCTURE AND MOVEMENT WITHIN HER DESIGNS, AND USES MINIMAL COLOURS, SOMETHING I WANT TO KEEP WITHIN MY LINEAR WORK.

MANIPULATION

AFTER PREVIOUSLY LOOKING AT GEORGIA HARDINGE & THEA BJERG AND HOW THEY MANIPULATED FABRICS TO CREATE STRUCTURE IN A MORE 3D WAY, I THOUGHT ABOUT WAYS I COULD POTENTIALLY DO THIS. LEADING ME TO USE CUTAWAY, MANIPULATING THE PAPER AND FORMING THESE 3D SHAPES. I FEEL THIS TECHNIQUE WAS VERY SUCCESSFUL AS IT HAS BROUGHT A MORE EXCITING ELEMENT TO MY DESIGNS AND CREATES INTERESTING TEXTURES. TO PROGRESS WITH THIS FURTHER I THOUGHT ABOUT USING THE LASER CUTTER AND TRYING OUT SUCH TECHNIQUES. FABRIC SELECTION WILL BE KEY AS I WILL HAVE TO USE A STIFF ENOUGH FABRIC TO BE ABLE TO CURVE AND BEND LIKE PAPER.

I ALSO WANT TO KEEP VISUALISING MY DESIGNS ON THE BODY AS IT PROVES HELPFUL TO ME AS I AM ABLE TO SEE IF MY DESIGN WOULD WORK ON THE BODY OR JUST LOOK ODD.

AFTER PLACING MY DESIGNS ON THE MANNEQUIN I CAN SEE THAT THEY WOULD WORK PERFECTLY ON THE BODY IN VARIOUS POSITIONS.THIS HAS EXCITED ME TO PROGRESS WITH THIS METHOD DEVELOPING IT WITH FABRIC USING THE LASER CUTTER.ANOTHER AREA TO THINK ABOUT IS SCALE. HOW LARGE I COULD MAKE THEM, HOW WILL THE CUTAWAY AREAS BE EFFECTED?

DEFINING STRUCTURAL LINES

I WANT TO ADD MORE OF A SOLID, STRONGER LINE QUALITY TO MY INITIAL LINEAR DRAWING, THEREFORE I HAVE USED THE ETHOS MACHINE TO DEVELOP MY DRAWINGS FURTHER.

THE ETHOS ALLOWED ME TO CREATE BOLD BLACK STRUCTURED LINES. IT IS RELEVANT TO MY WORK AND DEVELOPMENT AS IT ENABLES ME TO CREATE STRUCTURAL SHAPES IN A MINIMAL WAY AND ALLOWS ME TO START THE PROCESS OF USING FABRIC AND STITCH TO DRAW, PORTRAYING A VARIETY OF MATERIALS TO EXPERIMENT WITH. USING BLACK ON BLACK IS STRIKING AND KEEPS THE THE ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT APPARENT. AS THIS PROCESS HAS REALLY DEVELOPED MY WORK I STILL FEEL THE SAMPLE IS UNSUCCESSFUL AS THE DESIGN IS STILL TOO SMALL. I WANT LARGER LINES, MORE BOLD SHAPES. THIS IS SOMETHING I WILL HAVE TO TWEAK AND DEVELOP MORE.
