THEA BJERG & GEORGIA HARDINGE

THEA BJERG & GEORGIA HARDINGE

THEA BJERG AND GEORGIA HARDINGE ARE TWO DESIGNERS WHO USE PLEATING AND FOLD WITHIN THEIR WORK BUT USING DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES. YOU CAN SEE BJERG'S DESIGNS ARE MORE FREE AND FLEXIBLE, WHEREAS HARDINGE'S ARE MORE STRUCTURED. THEY BOTH HAVE A ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT ABOUT THEM DUE TO THE MANIPULATION OF THE FABRIC. AFTER SEEING THESE EXAMPLES I THOUGHT ABOUT HOW I COULD DIGITALLY PRINT THEN CREATE FOLDS AND PLEATING, COMBINING BOTH MY LINEAR AND TEXTURAL ELEMENTS TOGETHER. IT INTERESTS ME HOW BOTH DESIGNERS HAVE CREATED STRUCTURES BY CHANGING THE ORIGINAL STRUCTURE OF THEIR MATERIALS. AN IDEA/CONCEPT TO THINK ABOUT WITIN MY OWN WORK.

PROJECTING VISUALS

USING THE PROJECTOR TO VISUALISE MY CURRENT VISUALS HAS ALLOWED ME TO SEE HOW COMPOSITION AND PLACEMENT ON THE BODY IS KEY. A PRINT DOES NOT NEED TO BE ALL OVER TO BE EFFECTIVE WHICH IS PROVEN WITH MY BOTTOM LEFT IMAGE. IT HAS ALSO ALLOWED ME TO PLAY AROUND WITH SCALE AND REALLY TEST OUT MY DESIGN ON THE BODY. BEFORE THIS I WAS LOST AS TO HOW TO DEVELOP MY DESIGNS, BUT NOW THIS HAS ALLOWED ME TO THINK ABOUT PLACEMENT PRINTS AND HOW MY DRAWINGS/TEXTURE COULD DEVELOP INTO THEM.

TODAY I ALSO HAD MY 2-2TUTOR CRIT WITH RIANA PHILLPS AND ALEX. RIANA SAID MY LINEAR DRAWINGS REMINDED HER OF FOLDS AND PLEATING. I FEEL USING FOLDS AND PLEATING WOULD BE A GREAT WAY TO BRING A DIFFERENT KIND OF STRUCTURE IN TO MY WORK AND ADD A MORE OF AN ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENT TO IT AS THE FOLDS WILL FORM THEIR OWN STRUCTURAL SHAPES AND LINE, KEEPING THINGS MINIMAL BUT STILL DETAILED.

POAM X VARIOUS PROJECTS

I FOUND THIS FASHION PRINT COMPANY PRINT ALL OVER ME ON INSTAGRAM WHO DISPLAY THEIR PRINT DESIGNS USING PROJECTION. I THINK IT LOOKS REALLY CONTEMPORARY AND FASHION FORWARD AND ALLOWS YOU TO SEE THE PRINT AS A WHOLE AND ENABLES YOU TO SEE WHERE THE DESIGN WOULD SUIT THE BODY. I FEEL AS IF THIS WOULD BE A IDEAL WAY FOR ME TO VISUALISE WHERE MY TEXTURES AND LINEAR DRAWINGS WOULD BE PLACED ON THE BODY, AS IT WILL ALLOW ME TO MOVE THE DESIGN FREELY AND FIND THE BEST COMPOSITION FOR THEM EASILY. I ALSO FEEL ASIF IT IS VISUALLY INTERESTING AND ALLOWS ME TO GAIN A WIDER VARIETY IN FASHION VISUALISATIONS.

VISUAL RESEARCH CONTINUED

FROM MY INITIAL TEXTURES I CURATED PREVIOUSLY, I SCANNED THEM IN TO PHOTOSHOP WHERE I BEGAN TO LAYER AND EDIT THEM, ALLOWING MORE NOTICEABLY INTERESTING COLOURS AND TONES. TEXTURAL SURFACES ARE MORE APPARENT,GIVING ME MORE IMAGERY TO BE DEVELOPED FURTHER. I THINK LAYERING WILL BE A CONSTANT ELEMENT IN MY DESIGNS ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO THE TEXTURAL SIDE OF MY WORK, AS LAYERING PROVIDES UNIQUE AND INTERESTING QUALITIES AND ABSTRACT IMAGERY WHICH IS A KEY FACTOR TO MY WORK AS IT IS CALLED ABSTRACT STRUCTURES.

I ALSO PLAYED AROUND WITH MY LINEAR ARCHITECTURAL DRAWINGS I PREVIOUSLY DID, THROUGH COMPOSITION AND LAYERING I AM ABLE TO CREATE QUITE DECORATIVE, INTRICATE DRAWINGS. BY DOING THIS I AM ABLE TO START VISUALISING MY DRAWINGS AS A DESIGN, OR MOTIF. I FEEL ASIF MY NEXT STEP WOULD BE TO GATHER VISUALS SO FAR AND SOMEHOW PLACE THEM ON THE BODY, START TO THINK ABOUT PARTICULAR BODY PARTS AND SHAPES FROM MY DESIGNS WOULD COMPLIMENT EACH OTHER.

INITIAL INFLUENCES

FROM MY OWN PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE RUSTIC ARCHITECTURE I TOOK WHILST IN VENICE, I BEGAN SIMPLE, MINIMAL DRAWINGS FOCUSING ON THEIR STRUCTURAL LINEAR QUALITIES.I WANT TO STRONG BOLD LINES IN MY WORK TO CREATE SIMPLE BUT EFFECTIVE DESIGNS, WHICH I WILL BE ABLE TO DEVELOP THROUGHOUT MY PRACTICE.

I THEN BEGAN TO USE THE STONE AND BRICK TEXTURES WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURE TO DEVELOP TEXTURAL SURFACES, CREATED USING WALLPAPERS,ROLLERS, FABRIC AND FORKS ALLOWING ME TO CREATE INTERESTING RIDGES AND SURFACES. I LIKE THE MINIMAL TONES WITHIN THESE DESIGNS AS THEY CO-INSIDE WITH MY SIMPLE LINEAR DRAWINGS. HOWEVER I DO FEEL I WANT TO ADD COLOUR AND GAIN A MORE EXTENSIVE COLOUR PALETTE.
